MAC 68040 EMULATOR UPGRADE
If you want to upgrade to OS 8.6, find a copy of OS 8.5 on CD (that installer is too big to fit on a Zip as far as I know), upgrade to that and then run the OS 8.6 updater from a Zip or whatever. The upgrader will only upgrade a machine with OS 8.5 installed (so you can't go directly from OS 8.1 to 8.6).

But you say the performance of the more memory intensive OS's sucks on these machines?ĭownload? If you are referring to the downloadable OS 8.6 update installer your problem may be right there. I have the Power Computing clone, and a 7100, as well as my iMac. I guess I was using the download (installing from a zip disk), what I really needed was the CD, right? hehe Anyways, if you have any questions or want to talk my icq number is 8273989 and e-mail is I also just bought my first fiero. Maybe some of you talked to me if you ever called tech support. Apple had the tech support sub contracted back then and I left when they pulled it all back in house. I was a tech support rep for Apple for about 9-10 months a little less than a year ago. my vote would be for the g3, way faster and just better all around. If you get one of these computers with 120-150mhz go find a cheap G3 card or for less than $30 you should be able to find a 233mhz 604e card, and if your lucky a 1mb cache card. price depends on if its stripped or not. My vote goes for picking up a cheap pci powermac, sticking some ram in it (the ram is pretty expensive, but you should be able to get 64mb (one chip) for under or around $100. My 8500 has 176mb and that is plenty for what I do even using OS 9 w/VM off. try getting the installed ram up to AT LEAST 32mb, anything less than that will make the computer a ***** to use. The older macs can work great with enough memory installed. It uses less memory than OS 8.5 and above and also runs faster on slower processors. However, I would recommend staying with OS 8.1 on a 7100. They are ways around it, nothing to terrible just annoying. The reason I am asking is the retail version of OS 8.5-8.6 will run on a clone, but Apple didn't feel like supporting the non-Apple ROM disk drives and CD drives built into clones so the installer balks when it sees non-Apple hardware. Question #2: Is your computer an actual PowerMac 7100 or a Power Computing clone? (I noticed you said you were maybe looking to sell one above.)
MAC 68040 EMULATOR INSTALL
Question #1: Do you have an copy of 8.5 or 8.6 that is for installation on all Macs? Not a copy that was say, bundled with another computer but the full retail version? Apple sometimes "handicaps" the system disks so they will only install on the type of computer they were bundled with. I used to have a 7100 that ran 8.5-8.6 just fine before I sold it and got a G3. NOW you said it would run 8.6- is this true? I noticed 9.1 is available to install on those machines if you use the cd (according to the installation notes). KSLISH- My 7100 won't run 8.5 It says I need a G3 or better to run or install it. Still determined to run the MacOS on your PC?īy the way, the BSD Unix-derived MacOS X comes out March 24th, hope they are training you for the future, being knowledgable about Unix or Linux will probably help you on that one. It runs in DOS and I'm not sure what MacOS it tops out at. They also have made their previous Mac emulator, Fusion 3.0 downloable for free. Will only run up to OS 8.1 since it's yet another 68040 emulator. Looks like it's pretty full featured.Ĭons: Costs $69.95, requires a ROM dump from a Mac. Pros: Fast, 30-day free demo version available. And yet again, can only run up to MacOS 8.1.įrom what I have heard, it's the best that is out there for now. Though it may be a lot easier to find a ROM dump of a 68040 (Quadra) machine than a Plus since they are probably still around in a lot of places. You need a ROM dump and a copy of the MacOS.
MAC 68040 EMULATOR SOFTWARE
Includes the operating system.Ĭons: Expensive at $150 (better to get a real Mac for this price) and emulates a 68040 Mac which will only run up to OS 8.1.Ĭons: Not full featured since it is only version 0.81 (pre-release software that may never be fully completed). That Mac Plus emulator, but that is ancient technology.will that really help you? Here are the available Mac emulators for the PC:
MAC 68040 EMULATOR PC
They'll plug right into your PC monitor with a cheap adaptor. You can probably pick up a first generation PowerPC Mac (6100 or 7100 series) that will run OS 8.6 for $200 or probably much, much less (it's been a while since I priced them used).

MacOS'es after 8.1 require a Mac with a PowerPC processor. All the latest PC emulators in existance now emulate the 68040 Motorola Processor which can only run up to MacOS 8.1. There is no emulator that I know of for the PC that will boot MacOS 8.6.

I am a part-time demonstration rep for Apple, so anything I say isn't endorsed by the company, yada-yada-yada.Īnyways, here is the easy (short) answer.
